Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you process the orders?

All orders are processed in the USA. RTP Imaging wil never ship your materials overseas for processing. All materials stay in our facility until they are returned to you with your order.

Do you really have to preorganize your materials?

No. If you prefer not to organize everything beforehand, which can be difficult due to the size of slides and negatives, just send everything in to us so we can scan it. You can organize your images later after we post them to your personal web gallery. There you'll be able to review your images and organize them into albums which can be used to create the different slideshows, chapters and titles.

What scan resolution should I choose for 35mm slides and film?

The resolution required depends on what you plan to do with the images. The recommended minimum resolution is 2000 dpi, which fine for prints up to 5x7. This resolution is also recommened for DVD slideshows and photo CDs.

A resolution of 2662 dpi is required for 8x10 prints, but we recommend 3000 dpi to provide added data for cropping and enhancements. If you plan to make large prints and do a lot of image manipulation, 4000 dpi will give you the most data.

If you aren't sure what your plans are for the images, we recommend scanning them at 2000 dpi, and rescan your chosen images at the higher resolution. This will save money in the long run. Customers that contact us for rescans of an order will not be required to place a minimum order.

What does the sampling rate do?

A single sample provides one pass over the image to be scanned and processes the data. By increasing the sampling rate, any potential errors are minimized by averaging the data from the multiple scans. As a comparison, CD/DVD players oversample the discs by reading ahead and averaging out any errors prior to oututing the data to the listener/viewer, providing higher quality video and sound.

What is Digital ICE?

Digital ICE analyzes each channel (red, blue, green) for defects, such as scratches and dust. It then applies algorithms to reconstruct the missing data in the image, resulting in a scratchless and dustless image.

Are color corrections performed?

Yes, color corrections are performed to bring the images back to their original color state. Corrections are performed on the TIFF file to prevent any data loss. Correction can be done either manually or using digital ROC, and sometimes both. These corrections are included in the scan price.

What is Digital ROC?

Digital ROC reconstructs the color of the image from the base layer of the original film or slide. It then rebuilds the color in the image based on the color values from the scan. ROC stands for "Reconstruction of Color".

What is Digital GEM?

Digital GEM stands for "Grain Equalization and Management". Digital GEM gathers information during the scan to be used in reduction of the visible grain in the image. It can reduce the sharpness of the image which may have to be corrected with post processing. Highly visible grain is most commonly associated with high speed films, therefore Digital GEM is usually not necessary for most scans.

Will you make prints of my scans?

RTP Imaging can make prints from your scans if you request. However, since we post your scans to a web gallery, you can select and modify your scans and order prints from within the gallery. If you give friends and family access to your gallery, they will also be able to choose which images they would like to print. This is less expensive and gives everyone access to custom printing.

What can I do with the web gallery?

After we post your images to the web gallery, you will be able to organize your images, order prints and photo gifts, share the link with others, and download images. The posted images are JPEGs.
